Peter S. Kaufman

(b Bebek, Turkey, Sept 5, 1855; d New York, March 21, 1926).

He was the author of the first American textbook survey of Western architecture and of the only American survey of Western architectural ornament. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture (1876–8), Boston, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1878–81), where he was a member of the atelier of Julien Azais Guadet. After working for a year with McKim, Mead & White in New York, in 1882 he joined the staff of the Columbia School of Architecture, where he remained until the year of his death; he became professor there and was executive director from 1903 to 1912.
