French administrator and art historian. After a training in law and palaeography he was appointed a keeper at the Archives Nationales in 1866 and remained at the Archives until his appointment as director of the Mobilier National in 1893. He held this post until 1908. From 1866 he was also editor of the publications of the Société de l’Art Français, which he revived under the title of Nouvelles archives de l’art français, and in 1874 he was the founder of the Société de l’Histoire de Paris et de l’Ile-de-France. He was a regular contributor to the Gazette des beaux-arts, the Bulletin de la Société des antiquaires and other scholarly journals. His interests were wide-ranging and he published books on the Caffiéri family (1877), Delacroix (1877) and van Dyck (1882), among other artists. But his lasting contribution to art-historical studies lies in his works on tapestry and the series of publications of documents relating to French art of the 17th and 18th centuries.
