French family of administrators, writers and collectors. The brothers (1) Roland Fréart, Sieur de Chambray, and (2) Paul Fréart, Sieur de Chantelou, were active in the administration of the fine arts in France in the middle decades of the 17th century, being the cousins of François Sublet de Noyers, the Surintendant des Bâtiments du Roi, and they played a role in the return to Paris from Rome of Nicolas Poussin. Chambray went on to publish an important contribution to the academic debate on the relative importance of drawing and colour in painting. Chantelou was one of Poussin’s most faithful patrons.
