Balassi, Mario Italian , 17th century , male. Born 1604 , of Florentine origin; died 3 October 1667. Painter , copyist. Religious subjects, portraits. Florentine School. Studied under Jacopo Ligozzi, Matteo Rosselli and Passignano, assisting the last-named in the execution of commissions in Rome. Balassi painted a copy of Raphael's Transfiguration commissioned by Prince Taddeo Barberini and now in the Capuchin church in Rome. He enjoyed the protection of Prince Ottavio Piccolomini, whom he accompanied to Vienna, where he painted his Portrait of the Emperor
