Women Artists in Benezit

Women Artists  (2018)

Under the leadership of 2018 Editor in chief and feminist art scholar Dr. Kathy Battista, Benezit devoted a year of publishing to spotlighting the lives and achievements of women artists. In a year that was deeply impacted by the #metoo movement and conversations around intersectionality in feminism, the dictionary attempted to be inclusive and diverse in its commissioning, inviting scholars to contribute biographies of non-Western artists, especially figures from Southeast Asia and the Middle East, trans women and non-binary artists, and African-American women. Revisions and expansions to existing articles highlighted essential yet often neglected figures in the art historical canon from around the world.

The commissioning program was accompanied by a series of interviews with contemporary artists, which were published on the OUP blog, as well as a feature article by Dr. Battista on International Women’s Day on Using the Arts for Change.
