Global Photography in Grove
Zwelethu Mthethwa: Untitled (from Sugar Cane series), chromogenic print, 2007
Beginning in 2012, Grove Art undertook a multi-year project to update and expand our scholarship on photography in a global context. This special project was led by Dr. Tanya Sheehan, Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Department of Art at Colby College.
Significant new articles added as part of this project include Vernacular Photography, Photojournalism, Photobooks, Documentary Photography, Digital Photography, and Street photography, broadening Grove’s core coverage of the discipline. New biographies cover photographers around the globe including Gideon Mendel, Hércules Florence, Vivian Maier, Uchida Kuichi, Ernest Cole, Zaida Ben-Yusuf, and Héctor García, as well as Polaroid Corporation founder Edwin Land and Richard Beard, proprietor of the first commercial photography studio in London. New essays in regional articles discuss photographic practice in a local context, with new texts covering China, Japan, Korea, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, and Turkey. Updates to existing articles in Grove incorporate the latest research on artists such as Louis Daguerre, Antoine Claudet, Andreas Gursky, Shinzō Fukuhara, Alexander Gardner, and William Henry Fox Talbot.
Articles added and updated Oxford Art Online as a part of this project were gathered into the Grove Art Guide to Photography, published in 2017. A field guide for students, instructors, and scholars, the Guide provides a thorough overview of photography's history and examines photographic practices around the world. The book includes geographical and topical surveys, as well as biographies of photographers and innovators in the field. A glossary of photographic processes and techniques rounds out this fully illustrated, essential introduction to the study of photography.
On behalf of Dr. Sheehan and the Grove editorial team, we thank the dedicated and accomplished scholars who contributed to this project, as well as the institutions and individuals who generously provided beautiful new images to illustrate Grove’s texts.
