Beginning in 2018, Grove Art launched a multi-year project dedicated to African American art, led by Dr. Steven Nelson, Dean of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and a member of Grove’s Editorial Board. This initiative updates Grove’s coverage with new or expanded biographies on Aaron Douglas, Amy Sherald, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Dawoud Bey, Elizabeth Catlett, Howardena Pindell, Kehinde WileySelma Burke, Senga Nengudi, Thelma Golden, and James Van Der Zee, as well as new subject entries including The Harmon Foundation and African American Architecture, updates to our survey of African American Art, and more, spanning 70 articles commissioned thus far. In future updates, we will continue to add new scholarship to cover the work of Black artists in the United States and beyond. The editors send our thanks to all the scholars who have contributed to this project, and to Dr. Nelson for his leadership and expertise.
