What's new in March 2021

March 19, 2021

This month, Grove Art publishes 1 new and 38 revised articles, as well as 51 emendations as part of our regular corrections process. Updates include entries on Chinese archaeological sites and dynasties including the Sui (581–618 CE), Chen (557–589 CE), Jin (265–420 CE), and Qin (221–206 BCE). Other new material expands biographies of artists such as portrait painter Xie He, as well as Chinese art historians Guo Ruoxu and Zhang Yanyuan. This new scholarship comes from Grove’s ongoing major project on Asian art, led by Dr. Sonya Lee of USC and spanning thousands of articles across the dictionary.

Benezit publishes 1 new and 19 updated biographies this month, including American equine-focused sculptor Deborah Butterfield, Philadelphia-born creator of iconic abstract mobiles and inconsistently engaging lithographs Alexander Calder, and American photographer Vivian Maier.
