In this update, Grove Art publishes new material from our ongoing project on Asian art, with updated entries on Korean art and architecture. Forty-four updated entries include biographies of Korean artists such as foremost 16th-century plum-blossom painter Eo Mong-nyong, contemporary multimedia artist Koo Jeong-a, and 19th-century painter Yu Suk, sought after as a painter of “elegant gatherings” of jungin (“middle people”), a class of officials in Joseon society with special technical skills, including court painters, physicians, pharmacists, and interpreters, who formed poetry societies.
