Italian merchant and patron. He came from a prominent Florentine family of cloth merchants, associates of the Medici. He frequented humanist literary circles and was a friend of the writer Pietro Bembo, possibly through whom he met Raphael, who arrived in Florence in 1504. According to Vasari, he often entertained Raphael at his house, and in gratitude Raphael gave him two paintings. One of these has been identified as the Madonna of the Meadow (Vienna, Ksthist. Mus.), apparently dated 1505. Taddeo owned, and may have commissioned, a marble tondo that Michelangelo left unfinished in 1505, the Virgin and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist, the Taddei Tondo (London, RA). His contact with Michelangelo continued in 1520, when Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici appointed him to supervise the building of the New Sacristy at S Lorenzo in Florence.
