Italian family of painters and draughtsmen. The painting tradition of (1) Angelo Solimena, perfected by his son (2) Francesco Solimena, was continued in the work of Francesco’s grandson Orazio Solimena (not to be confused with another grandson, also called Orazio, who died young). According to de Dominici, ‘although he has a doctorate in law, driven by his natural genius [Orazio] receives great praise for his painting’. One of Orazio’s major works, the Virgin of the Rosary (Barra, S Domenico), is characterized by the reuse of many specific features from Francesco Solimena’s works, but there are also signs of more precise characterization in the faces, following the example of Gaspare Traversi. In the Battle of Muret (Barra, S Domenico), borrowings from Francesco Solimena range from the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple (Naples, Gesù Nuovo; see (2), below) to the Battle of Alexander and Darius (Madrid, Escorial).
