Art produced in the period before European contact in the 16th century in the culture area of West Mexico, which comprises the modern Mexican states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán.

West Mexican art is characterized by some of the most distinctive styles of Mesoamerica, Pre-Columbian. There has, however, been little systematic research into or study of West Mexican material in its archaeological context; most examples have been obtained through the looting of sites and the consequent destruction of all information regarding archaeological context and provenance. The unique qualities of West Mexican art, pertaining particularly to the shaft-tomb tradition, lacked monumentality. Few Mesoamerican deities were represented, and there was an emphasis on the portrayal of realistic anthropomorphic and zoomorphic ceramic figures. This aspect may have had a symbolic connection with shamanism and relates primarily to tomb offerings. West Mexican art seems to have functioned on the level of village-centred or domestic cults, rather than in the state-level civic or religious ceremonies of nuclear Mesoamerica....

Group of eight sites in Wachau, Austria. These sites have yielded important remains of Upper Palaeolithic date (c. 40,000–c. 10,000 bp), including a famous figurine of a woman known as the Willendorf Venus ( see Prehistoric Europe, §II, 3, (i) ). The sites have been known since the mid-19th century, when collectors started to search them for bones and archaeological objects, but it was the construction of a railway between Mauthausen and Krems that prompted the official excavations, which started in 1908 under Josef Bayer and Hugo Obermaier and continued until 1955, when Fritz Felgenhauer was director. The material recovered from the excavations is held by the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna. The best-explored area, Site II, had the longest stratigraphic sequence. The lower levels (1–4) were Aurignacian (c. 40,000–c. 25,000 bp), while the upper levels (5–9) belonged to the Gravettian culture (c. 30,000–c....

Traditional but unverified first Chinese dynasty, supposed to date from the early 2nd millennium bc and to precede the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1050 bc). The Xia dynasty is said to have lasted about 439 years, beginning with the ruler Yu and ending with the degenerate Jie. Arguments about Xia culture generally stem from Zhou period (c. 1050–256 bc) texts, in which the Xia are described as having controlled an area in the middle Yellow River valley; some scholars contend that these texts are euhemerized histories. There are no contemporary writings corresponding to the Shang oracle bones ( see China, People’s Republic of §IV 2., (i) ), nor have discoveries identified a corresponding archaeologically defined culture. The Xia’s supposed dates cover the early part of the bronze-producing Erlitou culture that existed in Henan Province, and the site of Erlitou in Yanshi County, Henan Province, may be Xia. Erlitou ceramics seem to have evolved from ...
