(b Amsterdam, Aug 30, 1769; d London, Feb 2, 1831).

Patron, collector, connoisseur, designer and writer. He was the son of John Hope (1737–84), a Dutch merchant of Scottish extraction, and used the fortune he acquired from the family bank, Hope & Co., to influence taste in Regency England, much as the 3rd Earl of Burlington had tried to create a new style of classical purity nearly a century earlier.
