Alexandre Antigna travelled to Paris at the suggestion of André Salamon, then professor of composition at a college in Orléans. He enrolled in Norblin's workshop before going on to work for seven years under the direction of Paul Delaroche. He exhibited at Paris salons on a regular basis from 1841 and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1861. His work was principally on religious themes but, from 1841 to 1846, he took an increasing interest in genre painting.
