Aldegrever, Heinrich

German, 16th century, male.

Born 1502, in Paderborn (Westphalia); died c. 1558, in Soest.

Painter, designer of ornamental architectural features, engraver. Religious subjects, portraits.

Some biographers cite Heinrich Aldegrever's birthplace as the town of Paderborn, Germany, where his parents lived, while others claim it as Soest. He certainly lived in Soest after having completed his studies. In his study of the 'Little Masters' (so called because they engraved mostly small plates), Albert Rosemberg disputes that he studied under Dürer. Rosemburg even claims that he had never been to Nuremberg, despite van Melder's confirmation that Aldegrever worked at the high altar of a church in the town. It is indisputable, however, that Dürer strongly influenced him. Other artists who influenced him are Barthel Beham and Georg Pencz....

Altdorfer, Albrecht

Painter, watercolourist, engraver, draughtsman, architect. Religious subjects, mythological subjects, hunting scenes, landscapes, landscapes with figures.

Danube School.

Albrecht Altdorfer could be considered as important an artist as Dürer. He probably acquired basic artistic skills while working with his father Ulbrich, who is known to have became a burgher of Regensburg in 1478. Albrecht is also believed to have studied the art of miniature painting. Almost all of his artistic activity took place in Regensburg where he worked from 1508 in various official capacities, playing an active role in the public life of the town. In 1526 he was nominated as the town's architect and directed building works on the ramparts and slaughterhouses. He also became a member of the town council....

Altdorfer, Erhard

German, 16th century, male.

Active between 1512 and 1561.

Painter, engraver (wood), illustrator. Religious subjects.

Erhard Altdorfer is believed to have been the brother of Albrecht Altdorfer. The latter mentions him in his will, dated 12 February 1538, as a citizen of Schwerin. Erhard was a painter to the court of Prince Henry the Peaceful and accompanied him to a royal wedding in Wittenburg. This occasion is believed to have given him the opportunity to meet Lucas Cranach, whose influence can be detected in some of his works. In 1516 he painted an altarpiece in Sternberg, Germany, which has been lost. In a 1552 letter to the young Duke John-Albert of Mecklenburg, he gives the impression of having been an architect along with his brother. Erhard Altdorfer is known today for his wood engravings, some of which are signed with a monogram formed by an intertwining of the letters ...

Amman, Jost

Swiss, 16th century, male.

Active in Germany from 1560.

Born 1539, in Zurich; died 15 March 1591, in Nuremberg.

Painter, engraver, draughtsman, illustrator.

Nuremberg School.

Like his great predecessors Dürer, Aldegrever and Beham, Jost Amman devoted his artistic efforts to engraving. Little is known of his paintings. He produced remarkable stained glass windows with brilliant colours, as did many other Swiss artists. It is reasonable to suppose that before leaving Zurich for Nuremberg he had the opportunity to work with some of the accomplished stained glass painters who enjoyed a privileged social position in 16th-century Switzerland. It is not known who taught him. In 1560 he settled in Nuremberg where he spent the rest of his life, honourably continuing the tradition of his great artistic predecessors. Judging by his production (540 works), he was very successful....

Assen, Jacob Walter van

Dutch, 16th century, male.

Born c. 1475, in Oast-Zaan; died after 1555, in Amsterdam.

Painter, engraver (wood).

Amsterdam School.

Jacob Walter van Assen went to Amsterdam when quite young and, from the beginning of the 16th century, produced paintings in a style somewhat reminiscent of Metsys. He is known particularly as an engraver. Many biographies refer to him as Cornelisz. (Jacob), but according to Le Blanc the name Cornelisz. refers to the father, and Jacob van Assen was indeed a member of the Assen family which provided Amsterdam with so many artists in the 16th and 17th centuries. His ...
