Eustache Langlois studied under Laumonnier and David. He was imprisoned during the Revolution and it was the patronage of Dupont de l'Eure that secured his freedom. Later when he was conscripted into the military he managed to obtain permission to leave thanks to the intervention of Joséphine Bonaparte. He settled in Rouen, was appointed as a teacher at the town's École des Beaux-Arts and had a strong influence over the artists in that region.
