The son of François Ragot the Elder, Ragot engraved religious subjects and portraits, particularly after Simon Vouet and Lebrun. He is known particularly for some very remarkable copies he made of plates by Bolswert, Poutris and Vostermans, after works by Rubens and Van Dyck. The copies are so exact that they are sometimes mistaken for the original proofs. It should be noted that Ragot's father was also an engraver with the name of François. It is highly probable that the work of the two artists has been confused and that the date of death given for the son in fact applies to the father....

Hercules Seghers was probably a pupil of Gilles Coninxloo for a period of months before the latter's death in 1607, when Seghers acquired a number of drawings and prints at the sale of the contents of Coninxloo's studio. He was a member of the guild of Haarlem in 1612 and made an arranged marriage to Anneken van den Brugghen (then aged 40) in 1614. He established himself on the Lindengracht in 1619 and was resident in Amsterdam in 1629, Utrecht in 1631 and The Hague in 1633.
