Lazar Vujaklija first trained and worked as a book-binder, but then began to teach himself painting before enrolling in Petar Dobrovic's studio in Belgrade, where he settled. Gustave van de Woestijne studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent but, while still very young, was obliged to move to the country because of poor health. From 1925 to 1928, he served as principal of the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Mechelen, where one of his pupils was his own son Maximilien van de Woestijne. He went on to teach at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, then at the higher Institut des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels. He died in 1947 following a protracted mental illness....
