A descendant of an ancient but penniless family from which he inherited no more than certain bizarre character traits, Solana was almost entirely self-educated, teaching himself to paint and write in order to express the strangeness of the passions which enveloped him. His teachers were García del Valla and Diez Palma and he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid from 1900 to 1904. He lived in Paris from 1937 to 1939. On his return to Madrid, like Toulouse-Lautrec in Paris, he spent nearly all his time in the most obscure quarters of the city or visited the villages of Castille and the ports of the Bay of Biscay, mingling with the local people and taking part in their festivals in search of the lost traces of a former proud tradition....

Lazar Vujaklija first trained and worked as a book-binder, but then began to teach himself painting before enrolling in Petar Dobrovic's studio in Belgrade, where he settled. He was a member of the December group and the Independents group. He visited Paris, Mount Athos in Greece, Italy and Switzerland. He was particularly inspired by the emblems and symbols used in the ideogrammatical paintings of both ancient and primitive civilisations. Gustave van de Woestijne studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent but, while still very young, was obliged to move to the country because of poor health. From 1925 to 1928, he served as principal of the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Mechelen, where one of his pupils was his own son Maximilien van de Woestijne. He went on to teach at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, then at the higher Institut des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels. He died in 1947 following a protracted mental illness....
