Albani, Francesco

The son of a silk merchant, Albani resisted parental pressure to pursue a career in commerce. From a very early age, he took a strong interest in the arts and, at the age of 13, entered the workshop of the Flemish architect Denys Calvaert, where he met Guido Reni. Albani and Reni left Calvaert's workshop to study under the Caraccis, where they met Domenichino. Francesco Albani showed such rapid progress with the Carracci that he was soon working alongside them. Francesco was widowed in 1616; he re-married and fathered ten children who were reported to be so beautiful that he never lacked for models. Albani collaborated with Annibale Carracci to decorate the S Diego Chapel in the church of S Giacomo degli Spagnoli in Rome and to paint the frescoes in Monte Cavallo and the ceiling of a room in the Verospi Palace in Rome (which featured subjects taken from the writings of Ovid). Mauro Aldrovandini built his considerable reputation on the strength of decorative work for theatres and private and public buildings in Bologna, Venice, Verona and (possibly) Vienna, where he worked alongside Francesco Ferrari. Like his nephew Tommaso, Mauro Aldovandini studied under Carlo Signani. Had it not been for his premature death, it is probable he would have become as famous as his nephew. Studied initially under Bernardino Baldi, then Calvaert, following whose death in 1619 Ambrogi spent years studying with Francesco Brizio (from whom he takes his sobriquet Menichino del Brizio). Ambrogi quickly made a reputation for himself as a painter of frescoes and oils, not least in his depiction of landscape, architecture and perspective. The Uffizi in Florence houses two of his religious landscapes; his Guardian Angel is on show at S Giacomo Maggiore, and his St Francis in a Radiance of Angels can be seen at the church of the Annunziata. Ambrogi painted frescoes for the Paleotti and Dentone palaces and also decorated several private houses and public monuments.
