Joaquín Vareyda was the most important disciple of the Realist landscape artist Ramón Martí y Alsina, who was director of the Barcelona academy. Vareyda sought to create atmospheric effects and employed a light, almost loose, touch. He worked mainly in the Olot region of the province of Gerona, which gave its name to the Olot School.
