John Henry Twachtman was the son of a German immigrant. He was initially a pupil of Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati School of Design, and later continued his studies at the Munich academy of fine arts in the studio of Ludwig von Löfftz. In 1875 he accompanied William Meritt Chase to Venice. On his return to Cincinnati in 1878 he settled almost immediately in New York, and he was elected a member of the Society of American Artists in 1879. He returned to Europe on several occasions and visited England, Holland, Belgium and Germany. In 1883 he entered the Académie Julian in Paris, where his teachers included Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. It was at this time that he met Frank Benson, Childe Hassam, Willard Leroy Metcalf and Edmund Tarbell, with some of whom he formed the Ten American Painters group that organised annual exhibitions without a jury in New York from 1898 to 1919, on the fringe of the official art events. On his return to the USA in 1886, Twachtman taught at the Art Students League in New York and then in 1888 he withdrew to a farm in Connecticut. He spent the summer of 1900 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The contents of his studio, comprising no fewer than 98 paintings, were sold on 24 March 1903 and raised $16,610. He won a number of awards: a medal in Chicago in 1893, the Webb prize from the Society of American Artists in New York, a Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1895 and a Silver Medal in Buffalo in 1901....
