John Panting attended Canterbury School of Art in New Zealand from 1959 to 1962, and then the Royal College of Art in London from 1963 to 1967. His sculptures consist of bars and metal rods which appear to be simple constructions, but which constitute figures in literal, physical space, whose complexity is a difficult concept to grasp, sometimes suggesting attempts to represent the fourth dimension. These spatial structures, with no meaning other than their own existence, are related to American Minimal Art.
