Jennifer Allora (b Philadelphia, Mar 20, 1974) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of Richmond, Virginia (1996), and Guillermo Calzadilla (b Havana, Cuba, Jan 10, 1971) graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Escuela de Artes Plastica in San Juan, Puerto Rico (1996). Allora and Calzadilla met in Italy in 1995 during a study abroad program in Florence. They then lived together in San Juan for a year before moving to New York City where they started working collaboratively while each participated in different residency and study programs. In 1998–1999, Allora participated in the year-long Whitney Independent Study Program, while Calzadilla participated in the P.S.1 Contemporary Arts Center National Studio Program.

American conceptual and performance artist. He studied art at California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, CA (1959–64) and at Stanford University, Stanford, CA (1964–5). His early work was Land art and involved large-scale outdoor projects documented by photographs. In Directed Seeding—Cancelled Crop (1969; see 1974 exh. cat.), he organized the planting of a field of wheat at Finsterwolde in Holland according to a specific pattern and then had a huge cross shape harvested out of the grown crop. He prevented any of the crop from being sold, an act he likened to ‘stopping raw pigment from becoming an illusionistic force on canvas’ (1974 exh. cat.). In the early 1970s he turned to such performance works as Reading Position for Second Degree Burn (1970; see 1974 exh. cat.), in which he lay in the sun for five hours with a book across his chest so that his skin burned, leaving a silhouette of the book. Mierle Laderman Ukeles studied painting and sculpture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and History and International Relations at Barnard College in New York, receiving a BA in 1964, and Inter-related Arts at New York University, obtaining an MA in 1974. She also obtained a Fifth Year Certificate in Teaching Art in 1966 from the University of Denver. She received Honorary Doctorates from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and also from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.

Laderman Ukeles’ work confronts timely issues by expanding her practice beyond the confines of the studio and into the public sphere. She works in a variety of mediums including installations, performance, and audio and visual works and engages with issues surrounding the borders of gender and class.
