Manabu Kochi acquired his artistic education on his travels across cultures and civilisations, from Tokyo to Florence, from London to Paris, where he eventually settled. He works in acrylics and oil pastels. He is also a lithographer, which allows him to increase the volume of his graphic work, and a sculptor: some of his sculpture is in cast bronze. His artistic identity is a synthesis of different influences - children’s drawings, Miró, Brauner, and pop art are dominant in his painting; and primitive art, Miró, Arp, and Max Ernst in his sculpture. His paintings and pastels are a maze of simplified images and juxtaposed graphic signs. Françoise Monnin has described his bestiary sculpture as ‘... anatomic fragments: a head on a foot, three fingers on a belly... a man with a leaf for a head beside a feather with a mouth....’...
