Starting in 1944, Carroll Harris Simms studied at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, the University of Toledo, and the Toledo Museum School of Art. He was the first African-American to graduate from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
