Pat Andrea's work is about testing the scope of representation in art. Representation is disturbed by the introduction of a collage system into the pictorial domain. The painter's iconographical repertory consists of violent images, often truncated, women wailing, wolfhounds ready to kill, men with menacing faces and armed with knives, all such attitudes remaining in suspense. Images provide not a comprehensible linear narrative framework but a juxtaposition of subjects that are ultimately incoherent. The meaning is all the more disrupted by the use of a graphic style that is in contrast clear and readable. Borrowed from the collage procedure of Dada and the Surrealists to undercut procedures of identification and interpretation, figurative painting for Pat Andrea seems doomed to failure....
