Alan Belcher lives and works in Toronto and New York. In the Pop Art tradition, Belcher uses advertising images, meaningfully exploiting their powers of enticement. His work consists of glossy colour photographs that are usually pinned, screwed, nailed or wrapped around various objects made of Plexiglas, metal or wood. By using the seductive colours of publicity photographs, and their perfect finish, Belcher's sculpture works on two levels. On one, he denounces marketing's manipulative wiles; on the other, he creates works of art that are almost Minimalist in their simplicity of form. Since ...

Mike Bidlo is, with American artists Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Jeff Koons in his early years, an exponent of Appropriation Art. Influenced by Pop Art, Appropriation Art consists of making a copy of a well-known work of art, which the artist then considers to be his or her original work. The aim of Appropriation Art is to highlight the concept of the artistic masterpiece and the uniqueness of a work of art. Bidlo 're-creates' paintings by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Giorgio De Chirico and others, though he never obscures their unique quality. Bidlo began taking part in collective exhibitions in ...

Anthony Freestone has described his work thus: 'My pictures are like a game of dominos in which the pieces are dispersed at the start of the game and gradually joined together in various combinations.' He blends historical, everyday and personal references, not actually creating any of the images used but reproducing them with a copyist's care. Examples include medieval miniatures, classical paintings, naive illustrations, Scottish tartans, advertising logos, photographs yellowed with age and geographical maps, all of which are brought into correlation by serving as pieces representing landmarks in his own personal history....

Jack Goldstein lived and worked in New York. In the late 1970s, he turned a critical eye on the world of the media, using studio assistants to execute neutral, almost technological, mass-produced images. His paintings of the 1980s focused on depictions of the sky and related phenomena such as lightning and comets, but also war, destruction and the conquest of space, with images of planes and flight squadrons. He also made a number of short films in association with his performance works: ...

Douglas Charles Huebler studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art at the University of Michigan, then at the Académie Julian, Paris. Like numerous young American artists who, despite the wave of Pop Art, remained loyal to Abstract art, his research led him, in terms of his early work, to 'minimal art'; his main preoccupation seemed to be gigantic dimensions. But in less than three years he switched to work which was more or less equivalent to Conceptual Art, and ultimately became one of its leading exponents, along with Joseph Kosuth, Sol Lewit, Robert Barry and Lawrence Weiner. His Conceptual Art enquiries focused on 'interpreting' the range of life of forms in multiple signs and places, rather than the internalising or integrity of objects typical of the 'minimalist' genre....

Jeff Koons trained for three years at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and subsequently at the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in New York, Germany, and Italy. Before embarking on an artistic career he worked on Wall Street as a commodities broker, and his artwork and his conception of the role of the artist remain suffused with ideas and concepts drawn from this earlier experience: the artist survives by supplying commodities to a specific market, governed by the laws of consumerism, speculation, and marketing.

Jeff Koons’ output comprises a succession of series of works on various themes, essentially rooted in the use of ‘ready-mades’ and drawing on the Pop Art tradition. Koons appropriates manufactured objects devoid of their everyday context; his later compositions incorporate ready-mades together with the human body, disassembled and reconstituted, or reproduced using craft techniques. In the Duchampian tradition, selected everyday commercial products are thus accorded the status of artworks, perfectly crafted with extraordinary attention to detail. His earliest pieces (...

Louise Lawler lives and works in New York. Her paintings and installations play on the contrasts between presentation and perception. Her work incorporates photography, installations, objects, texts and graphic elements, often appropriating existing works by other artists, notably Duchamp. These are repositioned in order to explore the public's changing response to an object in the context of a specific physical, social or economic setting: the content of Lawler's works is defined by their surrounding environment. She sought to challenge the role of museums as arbiters of taste, and espoused the anti-institutionalist movement in 1970s art....

Robert Longo served an apprenticeship in the restoration of paintings in Italy, and studied the history of art at the Accademia in Florence. He subsequently visited the art galleries of Europe, in particular the Musée Rodin in Paris. He took part in the foundation of the alternative space Hallwalls in Buffalo, where he was a student at the State University College. He moved to New York in 1977.

Influenced by John Baldessari (1931–), he has made works with images taken from magazines and the cinema. His smooth, academic style – with ‘real life’ images of stars from films or rock concerts – was a reaction against geometric and minimalist abstraction and was regarded at the time as characteristic of ‘Bad Painting’. Taking an image from a film by Werner Fassbinder, ...
