Jeff Koons trained for three years at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and subsequently at the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in New York, Germany, and Italy. Before embarking on an artistic career he worked on Wall Street as a commodities broker, and his artwork and his conception of the role of the artist remain suffused with ideas and concepts drawn from this earlier experience: the artist survives by supplying commodities to a specific market, governed by the laws of consumerism, speculation, and marketing.

Jeff Koons’ output comprises a succession of series of works on various themes, essentially rooted in the use of ‘ready-mades’ and drawing on the Pop Art tradition. Koons appropriates manufactured objects devoid of their everyday context; his later compositions incorporate ready-mades together with the human body, disassembled and reconstituted, or reproduced using craft techniques. Louise Lawler lives and works in New York. Her paintings and installations play on the contrasts between presentation and perception. Her work incorporates photography, installations, objects, texts and graphic elements, often appropriating existing works by other artists, notably Duchamp. These are repositioned in order to explore the public's changing response to an object in the context of a specific physical, social or economic setting: the content of Lawler's works is defined by their surrounding environment. Robert Longo served an apprenticeship in the restoration of paintings in Italy, and studied the history of art at the Accademia in Florence. He subsequently visited the art galleries of Europe, in particular the Musée Rodin in Paris. He took part in the foundation of the alternative space Hallwalls in Buffalo, where he was a student at the State University College. He moved to New York in 1977.

Influenced by John Baldessari (1931–), he has made works with images taken from magazines and the cinema.
