Annie Caroline, called Charley TOOROP: signature or monogram

Charley Toorop was the daughter of Jan Toorop and the mother of Edgar Fernhout. She began by studying music, and then devoted herself to painting. She worked successively in Bergen, Amsterdam, Paris (1919-1921), Brussels, the Borinage district of Belgium, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and then again in Amsterdam.

Although she started working under the direction of her father, she did not proceed from Mystic Symbolism, but joined the Expressionist movement, with borrowings from the constructive technique of the Cubists, or from what has been called 'Magic Realism'. Her first works are indebted to Van Gogh. She specialised in painting portraits, war scenes and still-lifes in which the most humble and everyday objects are imbued with a mysterious solemnity. Between 1914 and 1955 she painted 17 self-portraits.

She exhibited from 1909 in Amsterdam, and then in Paris, at the Salon des Tuileries.
