Annie Caroline, called Charley TOOROP: signature or monogram

Charley Toorop was the daughter of Jan Toorop and the mother of Edgar Fernhout. She began her artistic development by studying music, and then devoted herself to painting. She worked successively in Bergen, Amsterdam, Paris (1919–1921), Brussels, the Borinage district of Belgium, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and then again in Amsterdam.

Although initially mentored by her father, she did not proceed from Mystic Symbolism, but rather joined the Expressionist movement, borrowing from the constructive technique of the Cubists, or from what has been called ‘Magic Realism’. While her first works are indebted to Van Gogh, she soon created a unique visual language. Toorop specialised in painting portraits, scenes of war, and still-lifes in which the most humble and everyday objects are imbued with a mysterious solemnity. She also used herself as subject and between 1914 and 1955 painted 17 self-portraits.

Her work was not widely celebrated, though a recent resurgence of interest has brought new found attention to her practice. During her life, she exhibited work in Amsterdam in 1909 and again in 1951. Some thirty years after her death, she has been widely celebrated with exhibitions from Germany to a survey in Paris, at the Salon des Tuileries, in 2010.
