Rosemarie Castoro was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. During the early 1960s, while working as a graphic designer at an insurance firm, Castoro studied painting and dance at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She performed several dance pieces with the renowned choreographer Yvonne Rainer and choreographed her own original works as well. After graduating from Pratt Institute in 1963, Castoro decided to focus on fine art and incorporated several key elements that she used in her choreography in her paintings and sculptures. Castoro was married to the Minimalist artist Carl Andre, from 1964 to 1970, and was friends with fellow contemporary artists such as Larry Zox, Neil Williams, Agnes Martin, and Lee Lozano.
