This month, Grove Art publishes 47 new articles. These new entries come from Grove’s two major projects on Asian art and Latin American art, spanning thousands of articles across the dictionary. Notable new biographies include Cao Fei, Ana Tiscornia, and Zhang Xiaogang. In addition, Grove and Benezit publish 11 emendations in this update as part of our regular corrections process.
We are delighted to welcome the new Editor in Chief of the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Dr. Valerie Cassel Oliver. She is the Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Before joining the VMFA, she spent sixteen years at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Texas, where she was senior curator. Cassel Oliver’s work highlights emerging artists, varied media, and artists of diverse social and cultural backgrounds, and her numerous past exhibitions include “Double Consciousness: Black Conceptual Art Since 1970” (2005); “Hand + Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft” (2010); “Angel Otero: Everything and Nothing” (2016); and “Howardena Pindell: What Remains to be Seen” (2019). She will guide Benezit’s editorial decisions and its work to bring wider representation to the dictionary.
