James Peale the Elder was the pupil of his brother, Charles Willson Peale. He worked in Philadelphia from 1783 onwards. Having worked as a cabinet-maker, and served in the Continental Army during the Revolution, he settled in Philadelphia, where he specialised in miniatures until his sight failed.
