Florio, Christian

French, 20th – 21st century, male.

Born 1951.

Painter.

Christian Florio studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons, where he lives and works.

Though he was initially an abstract expressionist, Florio's exuberant compositions include figurative elements within an abstract framework, giving the impression of an old-fashioned mind expressing itself in a postmodern style. In contrast to these, he also creates works in a hyperrealist style, reproducing the folds in a piece of paper, or the metal blades of an awning. Reality, however, is always suggested rather than explicit; and serves as a point of departure for a simple architecture consisting of flat planes, occasionally broken by elusive markings....

Gagnon, Charles

Canadian, 20th century, male.

Born 23 May 1934, in Montreal; died 16 April 2003, in Montreal.

Painter.

Charles Gagnon trained during a stay in New York from 1956 until 1960, when Abstract Expressionism was at its height. It is therefore natural that Expressionism should have had a very strong influence on him in his early career, and at his first exhibition in Montreal his paintings were considered unrestrained and frenzied. His use of vivid colours with a total disregard for unity, violent brush strokes and areas simply spattered with paint resulted in work that was expressive rather than decorative. However, he developed from the spontaneity of Abstract Expressionism to a form of reflection on the act of painting itself. He divided the painting into superimposed squares, and when he wanted to break up the surface to catch the colour modulations, he incorporated steel plates into his pictures. His painting developed a certain refinement in ...

Patrick Germinagni was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons and Paris, the latter of which he attended in 1974. Abstract Expressionist, his painting, especially on papier-mâché forms, falls into the informal. Himmelfarb, John

American, 20th – 21st century, male.

Born 1946.

Painter, draughtsman, engraver.

John Himmelfarb is an architecture graduate from Harvard University. He is an exponent of Abstract Expressionism whose development of line has been described as 'dramatic'. His often calligraphic drawings and paintings spring from jazz rhythms or an allusive imagery. Himmelfarb is best known for the gigantism of his 'works in progress' executed in full view of the public, much in the way of a performance. He has benefited from grants from the National Education Association and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He has shown his works in solo exhibitions mostly in the Midwest but also at the University of Connecticut, Fairfield, and at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Christchurch, New Zealand....

Lahaut, Pierre Auguste

Belgian, 20th century, male.

Born 30 April 1931, in Brussels.

Painter.

Pierre Auguste Lahaut was a self-taught artist. Though he can be categorised loosely as an Abstract Expressionist, his dull blue-green tonalities and green landscapes vacillate between abstraction and reality. His later work is more muted and develops a more ambiguous spatial and pictorial landscape, with large areas of virgin canvas juxtaposed with assorted fragments of reality - a garland, a portion of a flower, a hand, a finger. These more recent compositions feature two or more uniform squares or rectangles....
