Abel, Bernhard and Arnold

A contract signed on 28 April 1561 commissioned Bernhard and Arnold Abel to produce 24 marble reliefs for the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I in the church of the court in Innsbruck, Austria. Their brother Florian Abel, who worked as a painter in Prague, was commissioned to produce the sketches for these compositions, which drew on scenes from the Emperor's daily life. However, the two sculptors led a dissipated life which made work impossible. On a trip to the Netherlands, Arnold met the sculptor Alexandre Colin from Mechelen and commissioned him to carry out the work in his place. Both brothers died during attacks of delirium tremens. Only three reliefs were completed and, according to Colin, Bernhard and Arnold played little part in their production....
