Nothing is known of the start of Cranach's career or who his master was. The earliest of his extant paintings date from between 1502 and 1505, by which time he was already 30 years old, and they differ markedly from the rest of his work. Their style suggests that the young Cranach had been heavily influenced by Jan Pollak (or Pollonus) of Cracow, who settled in Munich about 1480. Nuremberg School.

While his date and place of birth are not known exactly, Georges Pencz is recorded as having taken out Nuremberg citizenship on 8 August 1523, which implies that he had by then reached adulthood. He may or may not have studied under Albrecht Dürer, but the influence of the latter is unmistakable. However, Pencz was one of many assistants to Dürer while the latter was engaged in the decoration of Nuremberg's town hall in 1521 and he was even entrusted with painting compositions that decorate the south wall.It appears that Pencz was either apprenticed to the Beham brothers or in some way associated with them; when the brothers were banished from Nuremberg on account of their alleged 'atheist and anarchist ways', Pencz was banished alongside them. He initially had considerable difficulty finding work on his return to Nuremberg a short time later, and it is reported that he was finally hired by the city of Nuremberg to restore paintings in public buildings. It is not known whether he worked as an engraver prior to 1535, the date that features on one of his plates, but he travelled to Italy several times after 1529, and that he spent time in both Mantua and Venice. A painting preserved in Berlin proves that Van Rillaert was active in 1528. In 1547, he was retained as a painter by the city of Louvain. He married Madeleine du Vivier and had one son by her (Jan van Rillaert II). In 1549, he painted the principal decorations for the visit to Louvain of Philippe II and, the following year, he decorated a room in the town hall. Prague School.

Hans Vredeman de Vries was a pupil of Cornelis Floris (Cornelis Cornelis de Vriendt) and studied painting in Amsterdam. He was a great traveller and went to Mechelen, to Antwerp in 1549 and again in 1562 and from 1575 to 1585 and then to Leipzig. In 1586, he went to Frankfurt and then Brunswick, where he was based until 1596. In 1591 he was in Hamburg. Between 1592 and 1595 he worked in Danzig (now Gdansk) where he designed the fortifications and some ornamental motifs and also decorated the town hall and a number of churches. Next he went to Prague (1596-1598), to the court of Rudolph II, and to Amsterdam and The Hague. He had two sons, Salomon and Paul, who worked with him....
