While working for a commercial portrait photographer in the Bronx in 1931, Levitt familiarized herself with documentary photography through books and exhibitions. Inspired by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, she bought a Leica, which enabled her to photograph inconspicuously on the streets of New York.
