The son of Charles-Jean Avisseau, and uncle to Édouard-Léon, Joseph-Édouard Avisseau was a pupil of his father, and also studied drawing and painting in Lobin's studio. He worked in close collaboration with his father, and shared his taste for the historicist Renaissance movement, veering progressively towards the Baroque.
