Joaquín Vareyda was the most important disciple of the Realist landscape artist Ramón Martí y Alsina, who was director of the Barcelona academy. Vareyda sought to create atmospheric effects and employed a light, almost loose, touch. He worked mainly in the Olot region of the province of Gerona, which gave its name to the Olot School. Francisco Gimeno was first influenced by Vareyda's work before going on to develop a more constructed style....
