Born c. 1635; died c. 1707 or 1689, in Dublin.

Painter, engraver. Religious subjects, portraits, still-lifes.

Gaspar Smitz moved from The Hague to England shortly after the restoration of Charles II, where he was nicknamed 'Magdalene Smith' because of the large number of paintings of Mary Magdalene he executed. He went to Ireland and made his name. He had as his pupils Maubert and Gawdy of Exeter. He engraved some original prints....
