Mario Sironi was studying mathematics in Rome with the intention of becoming an engineer when he decided to enrol in the academy of fine art. He met Severini and Boccioni who introduced him to Balla. After 1914, he moved to Milan, his parents' home town. He was not only an artist but also a writer on art and an architect.Sironi's paintings depict a variety of subjects, often including faces, and seek to portray the wretchedness of the human condition in urban society. He was only briefly associated with Futurism, in 1915.
