Mohamed Racim was born to a family of successful engravers. He received early training from his father and at the age of 14 he joined the Cabinet de Dessin de l'Enseignement Professionel in Algiers. In 1917 he won a scholarship from the Casa Valasquez to visit Spain, Paris and London. Here he honed his technique in the manuscripts department of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and at the Iranian studies section in London.
