Jean Le Moal was born in the Perche region, where his father, a public works engineer, was posted; his mother was from the Ardèche region. He wanted to be a sculptor and in a compromise over his vocation, his parents sent him to Lyons to the architectural department of the École des Beaux-Arts; he ended up in the department of decorative art.
