German, 17th – 18th century, male.

Born 23 June 1655, in Augsburg; died 16 July 1719, in Augsburg.

Engraver, print dealer.

Kraus was the son-in-law and student of Melchior Küsel. He imitated Sébastien Le Clerc and produced copies of Albrecht Dürer and Lucas of Leiden. He engraved views, biblical subjects and worked for booksellers. A reference by Le Blanc giving his date of birth as 1737 and date of death as 1806 must be mistaken, because when referring to the artist's work he mentions pieces dated 1685, 1694 and 1700 among others....
