Hyacinthe Aubry-Lecomte, born plain 'Aubry', added the suffix Lecomte on his marriage to a lady of that name, arrogating in the process a suggestion of nobility. He started out as an employee in the French Finance Ministry, but his interest in composition inspired him to enroll in Girodet's atelier at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he quickly made a name for himself.
