According to Vasari, Antonello da Messina died in 1479 at the age of 49; it is this that has allowed us to establish his date of birth. However, Vasari also recounts that a meeting took place between Antonello and Van Eyck, and we know that Van Eyck died in 1441. In order to give credence to this story some biographers claim that Antonello was born around 1414, while others state that he died in 1493. It would seem from the various letters written by celebrated individuals living at that period or shortly after, and from archive sources, that the meeting between Antonello and Van Eyck may have been invented.
