Acuna spent a period living in France, where he was a student of Henri Bouchard and Paul Landowsky, the sculptors. He began painting in the late 1920s, with still-lifes influenced by analytical cubism, sometimes bordering on abstraction. Although he adhered to the mode of muralism that came from Mexico, he simultaneously opposed all forms of academicism.
