Aa, Hillebrand van derlocked

Dutch, 17th – 18th century, male.

Born 1659 or 1660, in Leiden; died 1721.

Sculptor, engraver.

Hillebrand van der Aa received his training as an artist from his father, the sculptor Boudewyn Pietersz. van der Aa. He was married twice - the first time on 13 May 1683 to Maria Bodde and the second time on 23 June 1684. As an engraver he worked primarily for his brother Pieter Boudewyn van der Aa, a printer and bookseller in Leiden; his engravings were of somewhat mediocre quality. Hillebrand visited the Indies and in 1721 lived in Batavia, now Jakarta. Daniel Stoopendael made an engraving of the Statue of Erasmus carved by this artist.
