Raphael

Raphael

In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Raphael to decorate the Stanza della Segnatura, the library in the pope’s private apartments. From this date, Raphael was engaged more or less continuously in work at the Vatican. His 1512 portrait of Julius II established a formula for papal portraits that endured for more than two centuries.
