One of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, Zheng Xie innovatively integrated calligraphy with painting. His calligraphy combined a running cursive script with a sophisticated form of clerical script, yielding a distinct style that garnered acclaim in the Yangzhou art market where individualism and eccentricity were prized.
